The Stand-In is the forty-third episode of the Natsume Yuujinchou anime. It first aired on January 23, 2012. It is the fourth episode for Natsume Yuujinchou Shi, which is the fourth season of the anime.
Yobiko, a youkai that can imitate the voices of others, sneaks into Natsume's house and asks him to call out another youkai named Karikami. Long ago, Yobiko had been watching over a woman named Youko who was meeting with a man at a nearby shrine.
One day the man stopped coming, due to an arranged marriage to another woman. Youko was never noticed of this, and therefore continued to wait at the same shrine day by day.
Seeing how Youko grew sadder each day, Yobiko decided to use his talent to talk to the girl with the voice of the man. Eventually, when he was at the height of his guilt, Yobiko told Youko the truth about the man and ran away.
When he came back to the shrine many years later, he found an old letter that had been sealed shut and wrinkled. Yobiko wants to see Karikami because Karikami has the ability to restore paper from old to new.
Natsume and Yobiko later meet Karikami, but Karikami does not immediately use his ability. In the past, Reiko took Karikami's name, so Karikami bargains with Natsume that he would restore the letter if his name is returned.
After his name is returned, Karikami restores the letter. Unable to read human letters, Yobiko asks Natsume to read it to him. Instead of a hateful message Yobiko was expecting, it was actually a letter of thanks for telling her the truth.
